My Darling Joella..

Every day I look at you.. and I am amazed. I am amazed and frustrated, and envious and terrified. I fear my heart may burst with all of the emotions you evoke. Everything in your world is beautiful and funny and exciting. You run at life head on, with no fear, pushing your limits and eager for your next adventure or challenge. I hope and pray that no one ever scares you enough to shatter that courage. But if that does happen, I pray that you may find your voice and speak out against the wrongs done to you.. that you may pick yourself up, put yourself back together, and bravely move forward.
When you climb on furniture or run down the driveway to the street, I want to pull you back, to hold you tight, and protect you. I want to hold you back, to keep you to myself, just as you are. I might go so far as to point out that no one else is doing such things, and wonder what put the idea in your little head? But I know it doesn't matter to you. What those around you are doing is of little consequence, you truly march to your own beat. The world is your playground and everything in it is a new experience waiting to be devoured. And I smile knowing you have a mind of your own and you will go your own way, forge a new path. I admire your ingenuity and creativity.
Many parents have plans or hopes for their children, ideas about who they'd like them to be or how they'd like them to turn out. But I'm not out to mold you or shape you into who I want you to be. I want you to be you! And I delight in learning more about you each day. Your growing vocabulary and your new found ways of communicating surprise me everyday, and my heart aches as I watch you grow up right before my eyes. I can't wait to see the young woman you become! Watching you discover yourself and who you are is a privilege I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. I realize you won't always want me along for that ride, and that's okay. You are your own person, don't ever let anyone tell you differently. But please know that I will always be here to catch you when you fall and help you get back on your feet.
As you lavish your innocent love and affection on those close to you, I am in awe of how freely you dispense it. I yearn with every ounce of my being to protect you from ever having someone break your trust, betray you, or take advantage of your love.. perverting and twisting it and turning it to pain. But I know that I can't always be there to watch over you and I just hope that, over the years, you can trust me enough to be open and understand that I love you, no matter what. I will be here with an open heart, a welcoming shoulder, and a willing ear. If you ever need to fall apart, I promise to help put you back together.
Your laughter is like music. I step out on the porch in the morning, greeted by the sound of hundreds of birds chirping and chattering, and I can't help but think of you and your darling giggle. Like a lilting melody, sweet and precious. It warms my heart and makes me dizzy and euphoric, I can't help but stop and smile and laugh right along with you. The way you spin and dance and sing songs in your own tongue may not draw an audience but it is enough to make me wish I could dance and sing with you. But grown-ups have little knowledge or understanding of your world. To be so tiny again and free from the weight of adult responsibility upon you seems unfathomable at times. It is so beautiful to watch. The magic and mystery of childhood still fresh and new. You make me want to be a child again and I do my best not to intrude on your world, preserving it and protecting it from mine. Adulthood and maturity come soon enough and I want you to enjoy your carefree innocence for as long as you desire.
And then come the rare delicious moments when our worlds collide and mingle. Catching fireflies together as the sun sinks low in the sky, sitting in a tent in the backyard just because, tea parties and baby dolls and painting our nails on the back porch. They remind me that our bond is growing, they show me we are connected, and I will treasure those moments always.
Watching you play and interact with your siblings is breathtaking. The adoration and curiosity is palpable when you are with them. The way you watch them and communicate with them reminds me that this is the very definition of family. Our bonds are still new and seemingly unbreakable, I pray that they stay that way. This kind of love is what all families should be made of.
The more I get to know you, the more I adore and admire who you are. Your bold and courageous spirit astounds me and I love the way you delight in every new thing in your world! Ever eager to learn new things and explore new ideas, I thrill at the thought of knowing who you are when you are grown. It makes me want to be more like you.

You Know

You know, don't you?
You know what's on my mind
You heard every thought
Every whisper in my words
You knew where I was going,
and you know where I've been.
I thought that I could hide from you
but no matter how I try
You seem to see right through me
exploring every corner of my mind.
Not a thing has to be said
about the way I feel.
I know you feel it too.
And it pulses between us
with a life all its own.
And when you beg for me to speak,
whispering words of reassurance,
you're speaking to my soul
saying all that needs to be said.
Because you know.
And I know too.
I feel you.
I feel what you think,
what you say,
what you do.
I know you.
I know where you're going
what you want,
where you've been.
I know what you're after,
and how you plan to get it.
Your thoughts, your heart
your passion and desire.
You don't have to tell me,
I know what you need.
I know who you are,
who you were,
and who you'll be.
Intertwined with each other
is the only way we're free.

The Other Girl (Part 6)

Melissa noticed that Misty was still not at school the following week. Jon explained that she would be back later in the week. She was growing more and more awkward and uncomfortable around Tom and John, growing weary of their stares and constant flirting. Jon still payed little attention to her at school.

But then they'd get in the truck. And he would drive her home.

Melissa's mother was not home yet today when they pulled into the driveway. She could sense Jon's eagerness as he shut off the engine and moved toward her. He put his arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him, his mouth working it's way up her neck. Despite his obvious eagerness, Jon moved a little slower today, giving Melissa a chance to enjoy the attention a bit and relax. She grew more and more comfortable, letting her hand slide from his neck down to his chest. He reached again for her hand and guided it slowly and gently the rest of the way down his torso to his waist, pausing a moment before whispering in her ear.

"Give me a blow job." Melissa backed away a bit and looked at him. She shook her head and pulled her hand away from his.
"Please," he said, his eyes pleading with her as he leaned in and kissed her neck again.
"No." Melissa answered, pulling away from him. "No, I need to go, Jon."

Melissa grabbed her things and quickly got out of the truck. That's it.. she decided. I have got to get someone else to give me a ride.

**********************************************************************************
The next day, Misty was back at school. She looked as though she'd been crying and was obviously upset. Her friend Linda looked back at Melissa disapprovingly and shook her head.

Shit. Melissa thought to herself. They were still together. She felt horrible. The weight of guilt came crashing down on her and she felt as though she might suffocate under it as she thought of how Misty must be feeling now. Misty looked up at Melissa with a pitiful tear-streaked face. Their eyes met and Misty's gaze instantly turned malicious as she jumped up and lunged at Melissa. Linda was on her heels and grabbed her just before she reached Melissa.

"I.. I didn't know." Melissa stammered quietly. "I'm sorry. I didn't know."

Succumb..

Here is a bit of 'weekend writing' for you.. something that doesn't normally make it to my blog. I prefer to stick with story telling on here, it tends to be more interesting. But I do these as well, usually scribbled on note book paper with a good old fashioned pencil, as practice for imagery, metaphors and adjective use. It may sound a bit scrambled as I wrote it over a couple of days rather than sitting down and pounding it out in an hour or so like my other posts. So, be nice. Here you go.. enjoy.

She dropped to her knees at the base of the tall redwood tree. She was alone now and she let her forehead rest against the spongy rough bark. She gasped for breath, her chest heaving up and down and her whole body shook. I can't run anymore.. I can't. She couldn't even remember why she had started running in the first place, let alone what she was running from.

Her feet hurt. Her legs hurt. The muscles in her back and arms spasmed in protest, threatening to no longer support her. Rolling her head along the trunk of the tree, she twisted her body in the dirt until she was sitting on the forest floor. The twigs and needles and leaves crunched under the weight of her body on the earth beneath her. Rays of sunshine streamed down through the trees like fingers reaching out to her from heaven.

It seemed as if there was a beast chasing her. She'd been running from it her whole life. A beast with fangs and claws that longed to devour her from the inside out. A beast bent on her destruction, bringing her tragedy after tragedy, heart ache upon heart ache. She just wanted it to end. She was tired of fighting.

Beads of sweat mingled with tears began to roll down her face. She leaned her head back on the great strong tree, her black hair tangling in the bark of the ancient trunk. She didn't want to cry, and angrily wiped the salty fluids from her cheeks as more formed in the corners of her eyes. She closed her eyes, feeling the warmth from the sun chasing the cool breeze off her eyelids as her body trembled with loneliness.

Loneliness. Aching longing and loneliness. She'd all but given up on love. The sting of betrayal had shattered her trust, but her loyalty still burned with a ferocity that rivaled this beast that she couldn't seem to shake. She knew that if she gave up hope now, that the beast would catch up to her. It would swallow her whole. At this point? That didn't sound so bad. And she wondered if anyone would even take notice of her absence.

"It's not fair." she said through gritted teeth, breaking the silence of her earthen sanctuary. A raven in the tree above her squawked in protest to her noise.. her interruption of nature's moment of silence. She gazed up at the stately bird who leered back down at her, pointing at her with his large black beak. His eyes bored into her soul, hard black marbles in his feathery head. He squawked at her again, egging her on.. taunting her. Go on.. let go. Just let go.

She pulled her knees up to her chest, hugging her shivering legs close to her body. Her long crimson dress falling around her like a pool of blood on the floor of the forest. All of her old wounds were breaking open and she didn't know how to stop the bleeding.. it felt as though she was dying a very slow and painful death. Slowly dying of a broken heart.

She dropped her head onto her arms and let the sensations wash over her. Succumbing to the huge dark wave of emotion, cold and bitter. Lapping at her body, drenching her in sorrow. She wept there. Great heaving sobs, her body jolting with the intensity as tears poured down her face and rolled down her neck to her bare chest.

Exhaustion crept in, slithering through the forest, ready to pounce. She looked up again to see that the raven was still there, perched in the tree above her, watching over her. The fatigue covered her like the canopy of night as the sun set, casting rays of orange, gold, and red through the forest. She lay down on the earth, still quivering and shaking. All the feeling drained out of her and her muscles finally relaxed their tension. She was utterly spent as she lay there, curled on the dirt, her fingers slowly twisting in the dead foliage beneath her. She closed her eyes as darkness descended and drifted off into a deep and heavy sleep.

20 Things I Could Look Forward To..

So Teri and I were talking yesterday.. and I was all 'woe is me' on the phone with her.. being depressed and whiny, cause I'm like that. So she decided she wanted to try and help me out.. to cheer me up. I told her to piss off.. but she wouldn't. So here is my assignment from her. She told me to list out twenty things that I could look forward to. They don't have to be realistic or practical.. but that would be a plus. So here goes..

I could look forward to...
  1. Taking a trip with my husband.. just us two with no kids. Somewhere romantic and expensive... and maybe even exotic.
  2. Seeing old friends that I haven't seen in years. Having a drink and a laugh together, catching up on all we've missed in each other's lives.
  3. Taking a trip to Europe.. seeing Ireland.
  4. Going to Canada again.. and having tea in the Empress Hotel (I was bummed when we missed it when I was there in high school).
  5. Meeting Steenky Bee and some of my other favorite bloggers in Colorado this summer.. But mostly meeting Steenky.. I heart you.
  6. Taking a road trip with my whole family back to California.. seeing old friends along the way, visiting The City, going to the beach, and seeing J's family again..
  7. Hanging out with Amy and David, and their girls, when they come visit soon..
  8. Eating an awesome piece of cheesecake without thinking about it making me fat.
  9. Getting a new projector so we can hook up our Wii again.. I need to do me some Wii Fit.
  10. Playing Mario Kart with Teri on Wii.
  11. Tossing back a beer (or two..) with Teri and Kevin..
  12. Visiting my brother and his family in Florida.
  13. Swimming.. and then swimming some more..
  14. Buying an oboe and playing again.. I loved playing oboe.. and maybe a trombone.
  15. Getting a piano, playing again.. and teaching my kids to play.
  16. Doing some acting, preferably theater..
  17. Riding a unicorn into the sunset.
  18. Getting a horse (Aidan would really like that too).
  19. Owning a dog again.
  20. Getting another tattoo.
Okay. There ya go Teri. Hope you liked it.

The Other Girl (Part 5)

By the end of rehearsal the following week, Melissa was feeling quite anxious about the ride home. She'd been asking around, but had not had any luck in finding someone else to take her home that week.

Jon stood patiently waiting as she packed up her things and got ready to go. She could feel his eyes on her and wished she hadn't worn such a low cut shirt. Stupid warm weather.. she thought to herself.

The ride to her house was very quiet.. as a matter of fact, they'd barely talked since the pool party on Saturday. She wondered if she might be able to just hop out of the truck and go inside today. She felt a strange sense of almost obligation toward Jon, and didn't know whether that or the idea of being alone in the truck in the driveway made her feel more uncomfortable.

Melissa breathed a sigh of relief as they pulled into the driveway and she saw that the garage door was open. Her mother was just getting out of her car. Jon pulled into the driveway and Melissa took off her seat belt and smiled broadly at him. But he was staring into the open garage, hand still on the gear shifter.

"Well, I guess I better go in." Melissa said, as her mother waved at them. Jon smiled back at her with an obvious look of disappointment in his eyes.
"Yeah, I guess so." he replied. She leaned over and gave him a quick hug.
"See you tomorrow."
"Hey, are you going out this weekend?" Jon asked as she reached for the door handle. "John and Tom and I were going to play pool this weekend with your brother.. you coming?"
"I don't know.." Melissa answered. "Maybe." and with that, she hopped out of the truck and entered the house through the open garage.

*********************************************************************************
Melissa did not join them at the pool hall. She really didn't have much interest in going out with them, with or without her brother. After their game, John came over to hang out with her brother and help him work on his car for a while. Melissa stayed in her room most of the time that they were there.

After a couple hours of sitting in her room sketching and reading, Melissa went out to use the bathroom. As she was finishing and about to open the door, there was a knock.

Melissa opened the door to find John.

He smiled at her and raised his eyebrows, pushing his way into the bathroom and shutting the door behind him.

John and Melissa had done a lot of flirting over the past two years. He was a senior this year and was getting ready to join the Army. Despite all the flirting though, nothing more than hugs had ever occurred between them.. until today.

John stepped toward her and pulled her to him. Despite the grease stains on his jeans, he still smelled of cologne and aftershave. He always smells good.. Melissa thought as his face came close to hers.

"Can I leave the bathroom, please." Melissa said, avoiding his eyes.
"Not until you give me a kiss." he answered. Melissa narrowed her eyes and looked him in the face. He grinned back. She stretched her neck, getting up on her toes and pecked him on the cheek.
"There." she said. "Now, may I go?"
"You call that a kiss?" John said as he pulled her tighter to him, lifting her off her feet. His mouth covered hers and she clung to his neck as he picked her up.. not knowing what else to do. She contemplated kicking him in the shins.. but wasn't entirely sure she wanted to. John maneuvered her to the floor and she squirmed a bit under him as he straddled her.

"I gave you a kiss." she said. "Now let me go."
"You didn't give me a kiss." he teased. "I gave you one." He pinned her wrists to the bathroom floor with one hand and bent over her to kiss her again. Melissa twisted under him as he started to unbutton her shorts with the other hand, but the hard floor was unyielding and she could barely move.

"John.." Melissa said when he finally moved his mouth away from hers. "John, stop."
"Stop what?" he said, sliding his hand up her shirt.

Melissa had had enough. She wriggled one of her hands free from his grasp and as he tried to catch it again, she twisted and pushed her way free from his clutches. He sat back and grinned at her, reaching behind his head and locking the bathroom door.

Melissa scrambled to her feet and watched as John's ears perked up.. hearing the door to the garage slamming as her brother came in the house. He jumped up and left the bathroom.

Melissa shut and locked the door again behind him. Turning around, she slid down the bathroom door to the floor. She sat there, wondering how on earth she'd gotten herself into this situation..

The Other Girl (Part 4)

Melissa's head broke the surface of the water, her face meeting the warm late spring air in the darkness as beads of water rolled down her forehead and a wake formed down the sides of her body as it rippled like a wave in the pool. It was early May, the weather had turned warm enough in their little Northern California suburb that Jon had decided to have a pool party.

His house was the go to place for such events. It was the perfect 'party house', with a large living room that opened out onto a deck. A killer stereo system and a big screen TV sat in the living room with the oversized brown leather furniture. The back yard was shielded by a circle of trees that reined in the various tables and chairs on the deck and patio, the bar-b-que equipment, the large swimming pool and the hot tub. A garden path wound it's way around the perimeter of the pool patio with benches and rose bushes scattered about.

Tonight's party was the first of this year and only a dozen or so people had come. But it was late now and the crowd had dwindled and Melissa was the only girl left in attendance. She was alone in the pool at the moment, having the full length of the deep cool water to glide along. As she neared the opposite wall of the pool, Melissa rolled over in the water and ducked her head under again. She pulled her feet up under and stood up, adjusting her green plaid bikini. She smoothed her hair, wringing the excess water out of it, and climbed the stairs out of the pool.

Looking around, Melissa realized that the other only person outside was John, who was digging in a cooler near the back door on the deck. Melissa walked silently to the chaise where she had tossed her towel and shed her sweat shorts and black t-shirt. Her sandals were still on the cement beside the chair and she slid her feet into them after rubbing them dry with her towel. The sun had disappeared, save for a soft orange glow along the horizon, and the air was cooling quickly. Melissa wrapped the towel around herself and picked up her clothing, heading for the back door to the house.

John looked up at her as she neared and he smiled at her as he stood and opened a can of Coke. She passed him and headed for the bathroom off the living room in the house, noticing that just Tom and Jon remained in the living room. They were hanging out and talking when she walked in. They looked up as she entered and their voices fell silent as Jon smiled a little nervously at her. Were it not for U2's With or Without You playing in the background, you could have heard a pin drop in the sudden hush.

Melissa slowed without stopping on her way to the bathroom, feeling her face flush as droplets of water fell from the ends of her long dark red hair and rolled down her bare chest. She closed the bathroom door and looked in the mirror, relieved to see nothing out of the ordinary in her reflection. She removed her suit and wrung out as much water as she could, rolling it in her towel and squeezing it. She stood for a moment, contemplating whether or not to put it back on under her clothes.. she expected she'd be leaving soon and didn't really want the cold wet suit on. She left it rolled in her towel and pulled on her green sweat shorts and black t-shirt, then pulled her wet hair back into a pony tail and opened the bathroom door.

Jon sat at one end of the sofa and Tom was sitting in an huge armchair in the corner. Melissa had spent lots of time with Tom over the past couple years, they were good friends and very comfortable together. She headed for the little bit of space left in the chair with Tom, feeling more than a little self-conscious about her attire in the presence of Jon. He grinned at her approvingly from across the room and got up to refill his drink, offering to get something for Tom or Melissa who both declined. Melissa was so relieved that Tom had agreed to take her home tonight, not feeling up to another trip in Jon's truck just yet.

She sank into the big leather chair beside Tom who put his arm around her shoulders. His breath smelled odd and Melissa wondered at what he might have been drinking as he started tracing circles on her shoulder with his finger. She felt his breath on her neck and felt a little dizzy as his lips began toying with her ear.

My God, what has Jon been saying about me?? Melissa wondered.

Melissa turned her head, pulling her earlobe out of Tom's mouth, so that she could face him. As she moved, he shifted in the chair hooking his leg over hers and practically diving on her with a kiss. His hand started at her knee and moved quickly up her body, groping her breast. Melissa twisted and pulled away, tasting alcohol on his breath.

"Tom, you're drunk." Melissa said, putting her hand over his to stop his groping.
"No, I'm not." he answered, moving in for another kiss.
"Dude, you're totally drunk," Jon laughed. "Maybe I should give you a ride home, Melissa?"
"No, I'll take her home." John said, taking a last slurp from his can of Coke. "I need to get going though, it's late. You about ready to go, Melissa?"
"Ready when you are," she answered, prying herself from Tom's groping hands.

The Other Girl (Part 3)

Melissa made note that Misty was not at school on either Thursday or Friday.. By Tuesday, her curiosity got the best of her, and she asked Jon.

"Hey, I haven't seen Misty around.. Where's she been?" Jon shot her a look of shock and hurt, as if she had just slapped him in the face. It was fleeting, but Melissa caught it.
"She's on vacation with her parents.. out of town until next week." he answered flatly with his face following suit.
"Ah, I see.." Melissa said.
"So, uh.." Jon smiled at her and cocked his head to the side, "You still need a ride home tomorrow?"
"Yep." Melissa said with a touch of reluctance. It may be time for me to start looking for other options.. she thought to herself.
"Alright then," he replied with a satisfied look. "I'll see you then."

*****************************************************************
Jon stood waiting as Melissa packed up her instrument. She stood and followed him toward the band room door, passing by Mr. Owens on their way out.

"See you tomorrow guys," Mr. Owens said, looking up from his stack of sheet music. "You kids behave yourselves."
"Always," Melissa answered, her eyes meeting his. He looked at Jon who gave a quick wave and raised an eyebrow.

Jon led the way through the parking lot to his truck again, opening the passenger door for Melissa, as usual. The ride to her house was always the same.. small talk and pleasantries. No real meaningful conversation. Melissa was half tempted to bring up Misty again, but questioned herself 'Why?' and couldn't seem to come up with an answer.

Jon killed the engine again today and was reaching for her before she had pressed the button on her seat belt. Melissa's breath caught in her throat, a little taken aback by his eagerness. He was already kissing her and pulling at her clothing.

"I want you.." Jon whispered as he took her hand and pulled it to the waist of his pants. He gripped her hand tightly and shoved it down into his pants. Holy shit.. Melissa thought. What the hell am I supposed to do? It was the first time she'd ever had her hand in someone else's pants before, she wasn't quite ready for this.

Melissa paused for a moment.. as if time had stood still just for her, so she could think for a moment. She slowly pulled her hand back and gently pulled away from Jon. He leaned closer and kissed her again. Melissa scooted back in the seat away from him and mumbled that she needed to go.

Jon looked a little hurt, but was still grinning. He breathed heavily as he watched her put her clothing back together.

"I've got lots of homework tonight.." Melissa lied as she straightened her shirt.
"Sure," Jon said, smiling at her, his eyes working their way over her body.
"I'll see you tomorrow?" Melissa said.
"Of course." Jon answered, starting the engine.

The Other Girl (Part 2)

Melissa watched Jon closely at school over the next week. He still seemed to be hanging around Misty less.. They were no longer holding hands and kissing on each other all the time, this made Melissa breathe a sigh of relief. It sure appears that they've broken up.. she thought to herself. She certainly had no interest in making out with someone else's boyfriend.

The week was busy, Jon and Melissa doing little more than crossing paths at school now and then. He'd give her the occasional hug, as he always had, and confirmed on Tuesday that she would indeed need another ride home from practice on Wednesday. His dark brown eyes sparkled and he grinned while they talked. She knew what he was after.

Sure enough, as he pulled his truck to a stop in the driveway the following afternoon, Jon killed the engine and gave Melissa a flirtatious smile. She took off her seat belt and he pulled her closer to him, wrapping his arm around her waist. Jon leaned in and kissed Melissa as he reached his other hand up her shirt. My, he moves fast! Melissa thought to herself. But, feeling secure that she was not intruding on another girl's territory, she didn't protest as he reached around her and unhooked her bra.

They sat there in the truck for a few more minutes, succumbing to the power of their teenage hormones. Then Jon sat back and looked at Melissa, she squinted as the afternoon sun was sinking lower and his face became a shadow with an orange glow coming over his shoulder. He touched her face and said, "I better get going.." Melissa smiled back at him and he gave her one last kiss.

"Okay," she answered, letting go and reaching her arms around her back to re-hook her bra. "I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yep." Jon answered, starting the engine. "See you tomorrow."

The Other Girl

"Are you ready to go?" Jon asked.
"Yep, let me just get my bag.." Melissa answered.

Now that Melissa's parents were both working longer hours, she was left with no way to get home from band practice. Jon had graciously offered to give her a ride.

"Let's go then," he said, smiling at her as his brown eyes made their way from the top of her head all the way down to her toes. He ran his hand through his short black hair and bent to pick up his saxophone case.

It was spring, nearly the end of her sophomore year of high school, and they had just finished the first installment of a 6 week 'spring training' for marching band. Mr. Owens wanted to get a head start on next year's season - he felt that the long break between marching seasons had hurt them in the competitions this year. He was opening the door to the equipment storage room near the door to the parking lot as Melissa and Jon headed that direction.

"Stay out of trouble, guys," he said, smiling at Melissa. "I'll see you in the morning."

"Bye, Mr. Owens," Jon answered as he walked past. Melissa raised her hand to wave and smiled back as she passed through the door. Melissa followed Jon to his little green Toyota pick-up, her flute in hand and music folder tucked under her arm.

Jon walked to the passenger side of the vehicle and unlocked the door, opening it for Melissa. She smiled and thanked him as she climbed into the cab and put on her seat belt while he walked around to the driver's side, putting his belongings in the back on the way.

Small talk ensued during the 10min drive from the high school to Melissa's house. The usual topics of how strict Mr. Owen's was, plans of what to do over summer break, and talk about the upcoming band trip. Jon was a good friend, almost like a brother to Melissa. He was the same age as her brother - only a year older than herself - and had some of the same friends as him. She'd been to some of the pool parties at his house last summer, and had ridden with him on the way to band functions over the past year. They enjoyed being together.

As Jon pulled into Melissa's driveway, only about a mile from his own house, Melissa unbuckled her seat belt.

"Do you need a ride next week?"
"I need a ride any time you can give me one." Melissa laughed.
"Well, sure, no problem!" Jon answered smiling.

Melissa leaned over to give him a hug as she thanked him. He wrapped his arms around her and held her just a moment or two longer than he usually did.. Melissa thought of his long time girlfriend, and thought of how little time they'd been spending around each other lately.. She recalled wondering if they had broken up. As she pulled back, ready to let go of this oddly long hug, Jon pulled her closer and covered her mouth with a kiss.

Melissa's eyes opened wide. She thought they might pop out of her head like a cartoon character, as if she'd been squeezed too tightly. She felt Jon's hand slide down her back as he kissed her it moved along her waist, making it's way to her front as his other arm held her tightly. She pulled back a little harder now, pushing against his chest, and sat back breathlessly in her seat. She was shocked by Jon's gutsy approach. He looked in her eyes and smiled, one eyebrow sneaking a little closer to his hairline.

"Um.. wow, Jon.. I don't know what to say.." Melissa stammered, her mind racing almost as fast as her heart. She wasn't even sure if she was attracted to this boy, and found his advances rather more forceful than she liked.

Jon laughed a little. "Well, I'll see you in the morning then?" he said as he put the truck in gear, still smiling.

"Um... yeah. Okay." Melissa said, still shocked and speechless. "I'll see you in the morning.."

I have a dream..

I have a dream, that one day...

I will feel like I have a good handle on home schooling my kids..
My house will be neat, tidy... or at least organized?
My kids will do some chores..
Baby Jo will do something other than squeal and grunt.. (there's a reason she's often called 'Piglet')
We will have our own vehicle again..
Life will not feel like it's whizzing past me at a million miles per hour and I will feel like I actually have time to enjoy things..
I will be one of the 'cool kids' in the blogosphere (though just having a few of them comment here is making me feel pretty awesome for now..)..
I will not be either nursing or pregnant.. seriously, 8+ years is long enough!
My feline companions and I will reside peacefully together once more..
I will get another dog, and actually have time for it!
I will also have time to do things like shower, and brush my teeth every day..
My husband won't have to work so much and miss out on so much..
I will publish my book..
I will be able to say 'I am a writer' and not feel silly or feel like I'm lying..
I will start swimming again..
We will look back on today, enjoy and smile at the memories, and thank God that we made it through in one piece...

The Boy Scout - Epilogue Part 2

He picked her up at 8pm. She didn't wait for him to come to the door this time. She heard that old pick up truck rumbling up the street and pulling to a stop in front of her house. She headed out the door and hopped into the passenger seat of the truck. She gave him a quick smile as she yanked her door shut behind her. He smiled back at her and she caught that look in his eye that she'd missed so much over the past year.. She knew tonight would prove to be an interesting night.

There was a double feature of Happy Gilmore and The Rock. It sounded like an odd combination, but both had decent reviews.

Billy and Mary didn't talk much on the way to the theater. Mostly just small talk and Billy talking a little about potential colleges he may go to.. Mary had run into his mom at the school library where she was helping students look up information on colleges that specialized in what they were interested in majoring in.

They pulled into a spot at the drive-in as the last bit of daylight disappeared. Billy chose a spot without many cars around it near the back corner of the lot and tuned the radio to the correct station for their screen. He parked the truck backwards so that they could sit in the bed of the truck out in the warm June air - there was a gentle breeze picking up and he pulled a blanket out from under the front seat in the cab.

Billy pulled out a couple cans of Cherry Coke and a big bag of Reese's Pieces.. it was Mary's usual order when she and Billy had gone to movies. She was a bit surprised that he remembered and wondered if it was merely a coincidence.

Happy Gilmore was up first and Billy and Mary sat side by side against a pillow in the truck bed with their snacks. Billy finished his first and then put his arm around Mary's shoulders. She was a bit surprised by it, but gladly snuggled closer to him. The breeze picked up a bit more and Mary shivered a little. Billy reached for the blanket and spread it out over them as they sunk down lower until they were nearly lying down with their heads against the pillow. It didn't take long for his hands to find their way into her pants again.

Mary was a little shocked.. and had no idea how to react to this. She lay there in the dark, trying to figure this boy out.. this boy who's hands were once again exploring her bare skin and pushing her clothing aside. Part of her wanted to just give in and let him have his way with her - she couldn't get over the feelings she had for him, she couldn't stop herself from loving him. But part of her also wanted to jump up and scream "What the hell do you think you're doing!? Get your hands off me!" He had no right to do this after the way he'd been toying with her over the last year, and to say she was growing weary of it was an understatement.

As the opening credits of The Rock began to show on the screen, Billy's hands stopped their exploration of her body, resting on her bare belly just above her still unbuttoned jeans. He was calm and quiet.. and, within a few minutes, fell asleep.

Mary lay there against his chest, listening to the rhythm of his breathing and heart beat. She wondered what would happen next.. Do they just go back to normal life? Is this somehow a new beginning to their relationship? Will he even call her after this?

As the movie ended, Mary gently shook Billy awake. He laughed a little and expressed surprise that he had fallen asleep.

"You ready to go?" he said.
"Yeah.. sure." Mary answered.

The ride home was equally quiet. Mary had no idea what to say to Billy.. and he seemed to have nothing to say to her either. She didn't know what she expected of him, but felt her heart sink a little as they pulled up to her house around 1am. She turned and smiled at him as she reached for the door handle.

"Well, don't be a stranger.." she said, pulling the handle.
"What? no hug?" he asked. She laughed a little, feeling a twinge of foolishness at her thoughts of him just going back to ignoring her, He's a nice boy.. why would he do that? She leaned over and hugged him.
"Thanks." he said, with that goofy half smile on his face again.
"Sure" she said, smiling back.
"I'll see you around, then.." Billy said, and she turned back to the door.
"Yeah... see you 'round."

Mary walked to the front door, pulling out her key on the way.. For once, Billy actually waited until she stepped in the front door before pulling away from the curb. She went to her room and got ready for bed, realizing that during that whole night Billy had never even kissed her.. that felt very odd to her. She crawled into bed feeling confused but unexpectedly happy...

Billy never called.
Asshole.

The Boy Scout - Epilogue

Mary sat in the computer lab, trying to look busy while she waited for the bell to ring. There was only about 10min left of class. She had gotten out of her last class of the day a little early to come here and hear about the newspaper class that would be starting next year. Her public speaking teacher had stopped her after class the day before to see if she might be interested in it.. apparently her English teacher had passed her name on as someone who had journalism potential.

The head of the yearbook team, who was also the computer class teacher, addressed the students who had come in interested in becoming part of the newspaper team. She was not to be the one heading the newspaper, apparently there was a new teacher starting next year that would be taking that on.. but they wanted to make sure there was enough interest, that there would be enough students committed to it, so that they could decide whether it would be an actual class or just an after school project.

So Mary sat there at an empty computer, playing Solitaire after putting away the papers the teacher had passed out, waiting for the day to end.

Billy appeared in the doorway with Sam at his side.

Mary's heart skipped a beat. It seemed as if all the air had whooshed right passed Billy and out the door.. leaving none for her to breathe and she feared she might suffocate in his presence. She had been trying so hard to act normal around him for the past year. They'd gone out a few times with groups of friends from band, but things had always remained strained and awkward between them.

Mary sunk further down in her chair, lowering her head and wishing she could melt into a puddle on the floor.. that way it would hurt less when he stepped on her. She prayed he wouldn't see her sitting there.

He and Sam sat down in a couple seats toward the back of the room. She wondered what could have brought him in here, 10min from the end of the day only a few days from the end of the school year..

She looked forward to the summer. She had grown tired of trying to gain his attention, trying to nurture their friendship, tired of hoping for more only to be met with consistently less. She looked forward to giving up her end of it and being left alone for the next three months. Next year he would be a senior, and she would be a junior.. Only one more year until he's out of my life.. she thought to herself.

She breathed a little sigh of relief as he settled into the seat a few rows back and sat very still, barely moving a muscle.. imagining herself dissipating into vapor and falling in little droplets to the floor.. perhaps a little pool on her chair.

She heard footsteps behind her.

Billy sat in the empty chair beside her and looked at her. That little smirk curling his lips into the old familiar half smile that she saw so often in the beginning of their relationship. She felt her heart break a little more. She'd grown to hate seeing him look at her like that on the rare occasions he did over the past year. She hated the butterflies that filled her stomach and the warmth that rose within her.. She knew what that smile meant. But she knew it would only last a moment. She knew he could never really feel the way about her that she did about him.

She thought back to a phone conversation that they'd had over Thanksgiving break..

"How come you never call?" she had asked him.
"I don't know.. I just get... busy, I guess."
"It makes me feel like you don't really want to stay friends.. Do you?"
"Yeah. I do. Of course, I do. I like you. Why would you think otherwise?"
"Well.. I don't know.. Sometimes you're so.. nice. So attentive and seem so interested in me. Other times you're just cold and distant and you just ignore me. I don't know what to think."
"Hm."
"Why did you go out with me? Was it because my brother and his girlfriend pushed you into it? Or were you even attracted to me then?"
"I was attracted to you.. I mean, their encouragement didn't hurt.. But yeah, I was attracted to you, I liked you."
"What happened then? Did I just bore the heck out of you? Did I just turn out.. not how you expected?"
"Gosh.. I don't know.. You sure didn't bore me. You're anything but boring.."
long pause
"Was it because I told you I'm not a virgin?"
"Um... I dunno... Yeah. I guess that was a big part of it.."

Mary had had a good long cry after that conversation. She had officially experienced both ends of the spectrum of relational consequences that her 'sexual status' could bring.. She had been judged. Judged and dumped by a Christian boy. But she had also gone out with Chris..

That day in Algebra class, she'd laid her head on her desk and cried into her sleeve.. regretting all that she had done, all that had happened. Wishing she could go back in time to the night her boyfriend had snuck into her window and make a different choice.. Chris put his hand on her shoulder and asked her what was wrong. She told him everything.. and a couple of days later, he had asked her out. It wasn't long before he broke up with her, disappointed by the fact that she really wasn't interested in hopping in bed with him next. He had gone on and on that she'd only had a 'bad experience' because 'he didn't know what he was doing'.. and he wanted to show her how great it could be. She felt so dirty. Dirty, and a little disgusted.. and trapped. She recalled how relieved she'd been that day at his house when they were lying on his bed and he was fumbling with her clothing - zippers and buttons and hooks... he heard the garage door open, signaling his parent's arrival home.

"Shit.." he jumped up and re-buttoned his own pants as she put herself back together, breathing a sigh of relief.. she just didn't know how to say 'no', apparently. Thank you, God.. she'd thought to herself.

That phone conversation with Billy had left her feeling unjustly judged. Who was he to consider her somehow less than, somehow not worthy of his affection based on that fact? It all fell into place at that time.. it all made sense. He was attracted to her.. very much so. But he didn't want to be. Because he was also disgusted by her. She knew he was also a Christian, she had even gone to church with him.. and he with her, while they were dating. He knew how things worked with God. She had made her peace with God.. God had forgiven her, why couldn't he? He couldn't get past seeing her as 'tainted goods'.

That smile. She wanted to close her eyes and wish herself away, but she couldn't. She sat there beside him in the computer lab, waiting for him to speak.

"Hi." he said.
"Hey."
"What are you doing in here?"
"We had a meeting about starting a newspaper class next year."
"Oh.." he said, nodding his head slowly but keeping his eyes on her. "I see." He was sizing her up again, she could feel it. She was tired of it, but couldn't help but hope for different results this time. "So.. uh.. got any big plans for summer?" he asked, leaning his elbow on the desk and tilting his head to the side as he looked at her.
"No. You?"
"Nope. You.. uh.. wanna hang out?"
"Sure. I guess.. You have something in mind?"
"Well, the drive-ins open next week.. I was thinking maybe we could go see a movie?" Gosh, that sounds an awful lot like a date.. are you sure you want to do that with me? she thought to her self.
"Sure.. yeah, that sounds fun." she said, smiling shyly as she met his eyes.

The Boy Scout (Part 9)

The next morning, Mary went downstairs to stand in line outside one of the hotel meeting rooms with her friends, waiting to be herded in and served breakfast. Moments after she and her room mates arrived, Billy and his joined them. Mary greeted him with a smile, which he returned very briefly.

"You mind if I sit with Sam?" he asked her.
"Um.. no, I guess not." she said, frustrated by his obvious indifference toward her.

She sat with her friends a couple tables away, concerned by the constant serious expression she saw on Billy's face.. wondering what was going on. Her heart was heavy and she had little appetite as she picked and poked at her breakfast. She couldn't wait for breakfast to end so they could go out and board the buses and she could ask Billy what was going on.

As breakfast ended, Billy hurriedly got up with Sam and headed out the door. Mary hung back with her friends, half tempted to sit with someone else. She was starting to feel anxious and was tempted to just avoid Billy for the day. She stood in line to board the bus and hoped that Billy wouldn't notice her.

"Hey, mind if I sit with you?" Billy asked quietly from over her shoulder. Mary stiffened a little as he put his hand on her elbow and closed her eyes. Don't let him see how you feel.. Keep it together, Mary..

"Sure." She said, trying to sound cheerful and putting a smile on her face as she turned to answer him. The corners of his mouth twitched in a lame attempt at returning her greeting. She turned back and faced the bus, not wanting to look at him as he tried to make eye contact with her.

They boarded the bus and sat 3 or 4 rows behind the driver's seat. The sun was shining bright and the bus was already warm inside. Mary took off her sweatshirt and stuck it between her and the window, settling in for the ride to the Wild Animal Park. Mr. Owens was a couple rows farther back on the other side of the bus, and Keith sat a few rows behind Mary with his girlfriend, Kate. Mary stared silently out the window as everyone took their seats and the bus driver started the engine. As the bus began to roll forward, Mary shrugged off the cold shoulder she'd gotten from Billy throughout the morning.. rationalizing that it was no worse than any other time he'd done this. She had just hoped that something had changed last night and that perhaps he was going to be a bit more affectionate with her. Apparently, that was not the case. Mary decided she was just going to be okay with that.

"Hey, Mary?" Billy said softly. Mary turned and smiled at him.
"Yeah?"
"You okay?"
"Yeah.. why do you ask?"
"You seem upset about something.."
"No, just tired. Sorry." She smiled at him again, trying to seem more pleasant.
"Oh... okay." Billy said, looking down at his knees. "Mary.. can we talk?"

Mary's stomach jumped into her throat, her heart pounded, her palms got clammy, and she felt short of breath. She looked at him, trying to conceal the panic in her eyes. Oh God.. no. Please, don't let him say what I think he's going to say.. Please, don't let this be the 'let's be friends' speech..

"Yeah?" she said, swallowing hard.
"Mary.. I've been thinking. And.. well.. I think we should just... be friends." Mary's eyes rolled back in her head and she turned away and looked out the window. "It's not that I don't like you." Billy continued. "I do. I like you a lot. But.. I just don't.. like you like that. You know? I mean, not that I don't think you're pretty, you are. You're beautiful. But.. there's just no.. no spark. I'm sorry."

Mary felt tears well up in her eyes. A flood of humiliation and sorrow swept over her and she longed to just dissolve into the bus seat and cease to exist. She'd never been so hurt from being dumped.. and she'd been dumped many, many times.

"Mary?"

Billy tried to peer around the hair that was hanging in her face, shielding her from his view. She tried to avoid letting her tears escape the corners of her eyes as she turned to face him. His brow was furrowed and his eyes full of concern - she could see he didn't want to hurt her. She forced a smile.

"Okay." she said, her voice a weak whisper. He sat back a little in his seat, relaxing a bit.
"So we can still be friends?" he asked. "I really don't want to stop being friends with you.. I love hanging out with you."
"Sure" she said, nodding her head as she turned back to the window. The first few tears jiggled loose as she nodded her head and she wiped them away furiously, trying to keep it together.
"Mary?"
"I'm fine, Billy." she lied. "Just.. just leave me be for a while, please." Her voice cracked, and more tears rolled defiantly over her cheeks. She squeezed her eyes shut and lowered her head, letting her hair fall like a curtain between them. Billy leaned back in his seat and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a tissue and handed it to Mary.

"I'm sorry." he said as she accepted the tissue. Me too, Mary thought. Me too...

The Boy Scout (Part 8)

Mary's alarm clock broke through the silence just before midnight. She groggily rolled out of bed and grabbed her clothes off the back of her desk chair. Pulling on her pants and shirt, she picked up a hair tie and pulled her hair into a sloppy pony tail. She yanked on her boots, laced them up, and grabbed a sweatshirt before swinging her back pack on her back and picking up her duffel bag as she headed out of her room. She stopped by the bathroom and checked herself out in the mirror, hearing her mother also getting up.

"Get out, it's my turn." Mary's brother Keith said as he pushed his way into the bathroom. He's so delightful in the morning.. Mary thought to herself.

Mary headed downstairs and waited in the living room for her mom and brother. She checked her bag one more time to make sure she had her clarinet and music and concert band clothes. She made sure her camera and wallet were in the smaller pocket. She also had her walkman with her and a few tapes for the long bus ride to San Diego. Despite the fact that Keith was born there, Mary had never been to San Diego. She was looking forward to all the stops along the way on the band trip. They were scheduled to have dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, visit Balboa Park, and see the Wild Animal Park as well as SeaWorld. Mary heard her mother coming down the stairs.

"Come on Keith! We need to get going.." she called up to Mary's brother.
"I'm coming!" Keith barked back at her. Mary's mother rolled her eyes.
"You ready to go, hon?" she asked Mary, getting her purse and pulling out her keys.
"Yep." Mary said, smiling at her mother.
"Let's load up then.. Keith already has his baritone in the car and he's bringing his bags down with him." Mary followed her mother into the garage and tossed her bags into the back of the car. They hopped in and Mary's mother started up the engine while they waited for Keith to join them.

As they pulled into the school parking lot, Mary could see two large tour buses waiting to be boarded and the parents and chaperons tossing luggage and instruments into the cargo bays under the buses. Keith and Mary said good bye to their mother and reminded her of what time to pick them up on Saturday as they got out of the car and pulled their luggage out of the trunk. Mary headed for the band room, dropping off her luggage with the adults who were loading the buses.

She walked into the band room and took a seat among her friends, not seeing Billy yet. The clock read 11:56. Good, I'm early. She smiled to herself. Mr. Owens had made a point to tell everyone to be there by 11:59pm to avoid confusion over the 12am or 12pm debate going on. Apparently, the high school band geeks could not remember the difference between noon and midnight. And, as was his motto.. 'Early is on time, on time is late.'

Mary saw Billy walk into the band room a couple minutes later, but rather than sitting beside her, he went and sat with his own friends. Mary wasn't surprised at all though, it seemed that unless they were alone together, Billy was determined to act as if he didn't know her. She'd even taken to calling him her 'so-called boyfriend'. He didn't seem to care.

Mary watched Billy from across the room. When he met her gaze, she looked away and was glad to see Mr. Owens standing in front of the room, waiting for everyone's attention. A hush slowly fell over the room as the students noticed Mr. Owens waiting for them. Mary noticed him pause and look at her as the band members began to spot him one by one. He smiled at her for a moment before addressing the class.

Mary watched and listened as the band director gave instructions on who was riding on which bus, what the bus rules were, and what to do at rest stops. As he finished the students began to stir once more and he stopped short, waiting for them to quiet and wait for his dismissal. Once he had silence again, he dismissed them to board the buses. Mary got up and grabbed her back pack with all her traveling essentials, heading for the band room door. Billy caught up to her and met her eyes, smiling.

"Hey." he greeted her.
"Hey," she said rather nonchalantly. "Did you want to sit with me on the bus?"
"Yeah," he said, still grinning at her. "Of course."
"Alright." Mary answered as she reached the line to board their bus. Whatever.. she thought to herself.

Mary and Billy walked down the aisle between the seats. Mary spotted Mr. Owens a few rows back on the left and met his eyes. "You two behave yourselves." he said, smiling sarcastically. He knew all too well what went on right under his nose among his students.

"Of course," Mary said, smiling back. "I always behave myself."

Billy and Mary took a seat about half way back on the left, Mary taking the window seat and Billy the aisle. Mary curled up in her seat, stuffed her sweatshirt under hear head, and yawned as she lay her head down. Billy sat down beside her and put his bag at his feet. They sat in silence as they waited for the bus to begin the over 9 hour drive south to San Diego.

Once they'd gotten on the freeway and were on their way, Billy pulled Mary closer. She gladly curled up in his lap, facing him, with his arms around her. She pulled her sweatshirt over her as a blanket, nearly completely covering her small body.

The bus rolled along the freeway quietly. Most of the passengers were sleeping. Billy and Mary took advantage of the silence and privacy, kissing in the dark while Billy's hands made the rounds on Mary's body. Mary was a little surprised at Billy's behavior on the bus filled with their class mates. Public affection was not his thing, whether people noticed or not. Still, she hung on to these moments, looking at them as confirmation that he was at least attracted to her. Sometimes it seemed like without this physical side of their relationship, they might not have any relationship at all. Mary could tell she was falling in love with this boy. She loved everything about him and did everything she could to try and win his affection. Yet, aside from his physical expressions, he acted as though she was merely an acquaintance, at best.

The next day was spent at Balboa Park. The band members enjoyed dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. As the bus pulled up in front of the restaurant, Mary was again feeling down about her relationship with Billy. He had been cold and distant most of the day. Walking with his friends much of the time and barely saying a word to her. She did her usual taunting and teasing, searching for reassurance from him.. hoping he would say just once that she was mistaken when she'd claim that he was only going out with her because he'd been talked into it.. hoping he would be bothered by being called her 'so-called boyfriend'.

"Do you want to sit with me at dinner?" Mary asked flatly.
"I guess.." Billy answered. "Do you want me to?"
"Yes." Mary said. "Are you embarrassed to be going out with me or something?"
"No.. Why would you say that?"
"I don't know.. you just seem so cold and distant.."
"Oh.. well.. whatever. I don't mean to be." Billy said without looking at her. It was not the response Mary had hoped for.

Mary stepped off the bus behind Keith and his girlfriend, they asked if she'd like to sit with them. "Yeah, sure.. mind if my so-called boyfriend sits with us too?" They laughed and said they assumed he would. Mary saw Billy standing a few feet away.. having heard what she said, he looked at her coldly. Nice going, Mary.. Way to win him over.. She began feeling like there was no hope for them.

After dinner they headed to the hotel to get some rest before hitting up some more tourist attractions the following day. Billy rode with his arm around Mary. Holding her close, he kissed her forehead as she rested her head on his shoulder. She let the comfort of his embrace chase away her insecurities.

He walked her to her room at the hotel and seemed to be acting a little extra nice to Mary. She was happy and wondered if maybe he had finally caught on to the fact that she needed a little more affection from him. She went to bed feeling good, feeling hopeful again about their success as a couple.

The Boy Scout (Part 7)

They pulled to a stop in front of Mary's house and Billy watched quietly as Mary unbuckled.

"Hey," Billy said as she reached for the handle.
"Yeah?"
"I was thinking.. well, I was talking to my mom.. and she had an idea." Billy began.
"Okay.." Mary waited for him to continue, he seemed hesitant.
"Well, we are going to San Fransisco next weekend. She suggested I invite you along.. maybe we could go to the Exploratorium.. You want to?" She felt almost as if he was asking her out of obligation.. not the first time that had happened, but somehow it was different this time.
"Sure, that sounds awesome." Mary answered quietly. "I love the Exploratorium."
"Okay.. well, I'll see you around at school then.. I'll let you know more when we figure out the plan, okay?"
"Sure.. see ya." Mary turned and opened the door and hopped out. She heard the truck start up and pull away as she walked up to the front door.

True to his word, Billy shared more details about their coming date after band later that week. Mary would be picked up around 9am and they would head down to the Bay Area.. They would be back by dinner time.

Saturday came and Mary was nervous. She felt slightly comforted by the fact that Billy's mother would be coming too. She and Mom had formed quite a friendship over the past 3 weeks and she was even more excited that Mom was coming along on the fast approaching spring band trip to San Diego the next weekend. Mary waited patiently and right at 9am their blue mini-van pulled up in front of her house. She saw Billy get out and head toward the front door. Don't screw this up.. Mary thought to herself.

They slid into the back seat of the van behind the driver's seat and Mom turned to greet Mary with her usual warm friendly smile. Mary felt more at ease as soon as she saw her.

"We'll be stopping down town to get Phil." Mom said. "He had to go in to work for a bit this morning, so we're picking him up there."
"Okay." Mary said, looking forward to getting to know Billy's father better. He was a very quiet man who rarely said anything at all. She also looked forward to seeing where Phil worked. Mary knew that Billy's parents both worked part time as volunteer fire fighters, but she was not real clear on what Phil's full-time job was.

They parked in a garage that was attached to a very tall building . Mary wasn't sure if it was, but it appeared to be the tallest building in Sacramento. They rode the elevator up to some lofty double digit floor and stepped out into a bustling office with all types of foreign looking electronic equipment. Proceeding down a crowded hallway, Mom lead them to Phil's office. It was full of various computers and maps and had desks all around the room with chairs at nearly every computer. Mary looked at Billy who had a proud look on his face.

"So this is my dad's office." he said as Mary looked around, wide-eyed and curious. "That computer over there monitors the dopplar signals. That one over there monitors seismic activity. And that one there does weather predictions and stuff."
"Gosh, how do you keep track of all of them?" Mary was surprised at all that went on in just one office.
"I don't. I'm not actually allowed to touch them, they just keep them in here to make me look busy." Phil answered, flashing the same half smile she'd seen so many times on his son's face.

From Phil's office they headed to the freeways and set their course for San Fransisco. As they rode, Billy put his arm around Mary and she snuggled against his chest. She rested her hand on his knee and closed her eyes to keep away the bright sun that shown through her window. Billy's arm slid down behind her and around her waist, slipping up underneath her shirt and making its way across her smooth belly. She took his touch to mean that he was still interested in her and Mary smiled to herself as he wiggled his hand into her bra.

The car ride was long and quiet, Billy's parents listened to classic rock and Billy and Mary were careful not to draw attention to themselves in the back seat. Mary relaxed against him and enjoyed his touching and fondling, occasionally rubbing her hand up and down his thigh.. not even knowing what else to do. She had grown accustomed, in her 15 years, to touching and fondling from the opposite sex.. but still had no clue what to do when it came to returning the favor.

When they arrived at the Exploratorium, Billy and Mary walked along a few feet separate from Billy's parents. She half-way wished that they would stay with them and enjoy the outing together, but didn't mind being on her own with Billy too much. She just felt awkward and unsure what to say to him.. having not really spoken much since their pool game the previous weekend. They walked along hand in hand, engaging in the various activities, their bodies never straying more than a foot or so apart, until it was time to have some lunch and head home. When out in public together, Mary felt like they were almost strangers. She wished there was more verbal communication between them.

Billy's mother had packed a picnic lunch and they drove to Golden Gate park where they sat in one of the many picnic areas and enjoyed their food together in the cool early spring air. The morning's fog was had burned off and Mary left her hoody in the van, enjoying the sunshine as it warmed her shoulders.

The ride home was equally quiet. Mary began to nod off a bit and Billy offered to let her lay in his lap. She took him up on it and curled up on the seat beside him. Once again, he hands found their way under her clothing and Mary felt a little overwhelmed by their exploring as he ran his hands over her breasts again and then let them slide down past her waistband. She sighed softly and pretended to be asleep.. unsure what to think anymore.

"Mary?" Mom said. Billy pulled his hand quietly out of Mary's pants as she looked over her shoulder. "You want to come to our house for dinner? or do you need us to drop you off at home, sweetie?" Mary looked up and thought for a moment.
"I'd love to come for dinner." Mary answered, smiling at Mom. Mom smiled back and turned her eyes back to the front seat. Billy shifted a little in his seat and gently caressed Mary's belly, obviously a little put off by his mother's interruption.

The Boy Scout (Part 6)

"Hello?"
"Hey Mary, what are you up to?" It had been nearly two weeks since Billy had called. Sure, they had seen each other at school.. ate lunch together once or twice, and said hello when they passed each other in the halls.. But Mary had all but given up on the boy and was working hard not to sulk too much about it. His voice was both welcome and irritating.. more welcome though.
"Nothing. What are you up to?" she answered.
"Just calling you. You want to hang out or something?"
"Sure, I guess. What did you have in mind?"
"Oh, I don't know.. I thought maybe you could come over here and we could shoot some pool or something.. Sound okay?"
"That sounds great." Mary answered smiling to herself.
"You want me to come pick you up?"
"Nah, I was thinking I'd just walk." There was a pause on the other end of the line.
"Really??"
"I'm kidding, Billy. Yes, please, pick me up."

Mary hung up the phone, informed her mother of her plans to play pool at Billy's house, and ran upstairs to her room to get ready. She looked in the mirror at her jeans and t-shirt and contemplated changing. She noticed the way the snug jeans hugged her body and her fitted blue t-shirt with it's scooped neck showed off just a hint of cleavage. She smiled, pulled her hair up in a sloppy knot behind her head and pulled out some strawberry lip gloss.

Mary grabbed her black hoodie and ran back downstairs to slip on her boots. As she finished tying them, she heard Billy knock at the door. She threw her sweatshirt on and yelled good bye to her mom as she opened the door and stepped out into the cool late winter California sunshine. She followed Billy to his truck and hopped in to her seat. Yanking the door shut, she smiled at Billy as she buckled her seat belt. He smiled back and started the engine before pulling away from the curb without a word.

As they sat on the little bench inside the front door to remove their shoes at Billy's house, Mary noticed several pairs of slippers lined up underneath it on the floor. Billy pulled out a small pair and handed them to Mary.

"My mom bought some guest slippers.. since your feet were cold last time you were here. She wasn't sure what size to get.. I just told her you had really small feet." Mary blushed a little, touched by his mom's consideration. She turned the slippers over and found the size 7 circled on the bottom.
"These will work." She said smiling.
"Are they the right size?" Billy asked.
"No, I wear a 6. But these will work fine." she answered.

Billy walked to the entrance to the family room and kitchen and informed his dad that he was home then lead the way upstair to his room with Mary following.

Billy's room was at the top of the stairs. It was a large room with double doors. There was a full size bed to the right and a desk to the left. Behind the open double doors, between the bed and wall, there was a small pool table. It wasn't a full size table, but it was a pool table. Billy shut one of the doors so that they would have better access around the table. He reached for the cues that were in a small closet and pulled out a rack of balls as well. He handed her a cue as he set the balls on the table.

"Yeah.. it's a small table. But I have regular sized balls." Mary could see him rethink that statement as he lifted the rack. She giggled a little and he made a face at her. "Oh, you know what I mean.."

They didn't talk a lot as they played.. and when they did it was mostly immature jokes about hitting balls with sticks and having bad aim when it came to 'getting it in'. Billy was more than happy to give her a few pointers again as he had the night of the dance. Mary noticed that he pressed a little harder against her when he'd reach his arms around her to help her position her hands on the cue properly.

Mary really liked Billy. She liked everything about him. And she was still a little surprised that such a nice 'good' boy had taken an interest in her. She began to think about her last boyfriend.. thinking about how far their relationship had gone, and how much trouble they'd gotten in. She wondered how much she should share with Billy.. and when.

"What's the matter?" Billy said, noticing her sullen look.
"Nothing..." she answered distantly.
"Liar." Billy said, giving her his usual half smile. He walked around the table and stood close to her, putting and arm around her waist. "C'mon.. what's wrong? Did I say something stupid?"
"No," Mary laughed. "No. I'm having a great time. I really like hanging out with you." she said, smiling at him.
"I like hanging out with you too." he said as he leaned closer and kissed her. Mary was a little surprised at the suddenness but melted into his arms as he pulled her closer. "So what's wrong?" he said as he looked down at her face.
"I don't know.." Mary said, her eyes wandering away from his gaze. "I guess I'm just afraid you won't like me so much when you get to know me." she said quietly.
"Why would you think that?" he said, sounding a little surprised.
"I'm just.. I don't know." Mary stammered. "You're a really nice guy.. and I.. well, I'm not as 'good' as I might seem." she said giving him a shy look.
"What do you mean by that?" he asked giving her a doubtful look.
"Well.. I.. I've had a lot of boyfriends." she said looking at her feet.
"Okay.." Billy said. "What's wrong with that?"
"Nothing.. I guess." Mary said quietly. "I guess it's just what I've done with them that's bad."
Billy stepped away and looked at her. He had a serious face, as if he was trying to assess something. Trying to determine it's value. Trying to determine her value.
"Does this have to do with that guy you were dating a few months ago?" he asked.
"Yeah."
"I see. So is there something you're trying to tell me then? You have me pretty confused here..."
"I guess.." she said hesitantly. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She looked Billy in the eye and said, "I'm not a virgin."

Billy thought about that for a moment before responding. He reached for his pool cue and took his turn while Mary stood watching him. She had a sinking feeling inside, like she had just flushed her chances with this boy down the toilet. He stood again and looked at her. His face softened and he smiled.

"Okay." he said.
"That's it? Just 'Okay'?" Mary replied.
"What do you want me to say? 'Well I am a virgin.'? I mean.. nothing I really can say to that, is there?" Mary nodded and reached for her cue. She looked at him again, before lining up her shot. He smiled again. "It's okay, Mary."

During the ride home, Billy was his usual silent self. Though not smiling so much. Mary would have given anything, once again, to get inside his head and hear his thoughts. His lack of reaction bothered her and she wished he would just tell her how he felt. She couldn't help but feel that what she had told him had somehow changed things.

After their dance date, Billy had asked Mary out. She really liked him and her brother and his girlfriend thought they would make a great couple. They urged Billy to ask her out, and so he did. She loved to tease him that he'd been 'talked into being her boyfriend'. They had hung out a couple times. They'd gone out with her brother and his girlfriend, gone to a movie with a group of friends from band. He seemed to really like being with her, and she felt like they were growing in their relationship.. despite the fact that he rarely called or initiated outings. Now, she wasn't so sure of anything. And she feared that she had just snuffed out whatever small flame there was between them.

The Boy Scout (Part 4)

Needless to say, Billy quickly won both games of pool that they played. Mary didn't mind much though, he was kind enough to give her plenty of pointers, helping her position her hands better on the cue, reaching around her and giving quiet instruction in her ear as she tried to focus on aiming at a ball. Not the easiest task with someone she was so attracted to literally breathing down her neck.

After two games, it was time to head over to the high school for the dance. They walked across the parking lot to Billy's truck, and got in. Mary had some trouble shutting the old creaky door as the temperature had dropped a little outside and it was sticking. Billy laughed at her a little as she pulled on the door as hard as she could and it did not budge.

"No," he chuckled, "you really have to pull hard." Mary shot him a cold look as she yanked one more time and the door slammed shut. She pulled on her seat belt and gave him a smug smile as she turned her nose up at him. He laughed again as he backed out of the parking space.

They went through the rituals of standing in line and posing for pictures before going into the dark lunch room with it's shiny streamers and thumping music. Mary felt a bit awkward standing in line with him.. surrounded by couples that had their arms around each other, were holding hands, or hugging.. Here she stood with a boy that she didn't even know how to talk to and who barely even looked at her. As the last couple before them finished their turn, Billy put his hand on her back and walked her over to the cheesy life raft scene that they had set up to go along with the 'Lost at Sea' theme. Mary smiled broadly as Billy stood with his arm around her waist, pulling her close to him and grinning at the camera. Click. *flash*

"What a handsome couple you two make!" Oh my gosh.. he just called us a couple! Mary liked the sound of that..

They made their way to the lunch room with the hoards of other teens all walking around the courtyard between the lunchroom and the gym, goofing around, laughing, and hanging on each other.

Neither Mary or Billy were real big on dancing, so they did a lot of standing in the back of the room, staring at the mob in front of the DJ's booth, not really saying anything to each other. They joined in for the slow songs, and for the goofy songs, and the rest of the time pulled the wall flower act or sat at the tables with their friends. Despite the fact that most people who saw them would have assumed their date that evening to be a total bomb and that they were bored out of their mind, they actually both thought it was perfect.

As the last slow song came to an end, Mary looked up at Billy in the darkness with the colored lights swirling around them. He looked down and smiled softly at her, she saw genuine affection in his face for the first time. He leaned down and kissed her gently on the lips.

The lights came on in the room and Billy let go of Mary and took her hand, leading her out of the crowd back to the court yard. Once they were outside, they stopped to soak in some of the cool night air, relieved to be out of the stuffy room and crowd of sweaty teenagers.

"So, you need to go home right away?" Billy asked. "Or would you like to come over and watch a movie or something?"

"We could watch a movie," Mary answered. "Sounds like fun. My parents don't care as long as I'm home by midnight."

"Okay then," he said, his silly half smile returning. "Let's go."

The Boy Scout (Part 3)

"Mary!! Pho-one!!" Mary's mother called out from downstairs. Mary jumped up and ran down the stairs, nearly tripping on the entry rug in her rush to the phone.

"Hello?" she said breathlessly into the receiver.
"Hey," Billy answered. "You ready to go?"
"Yeah," Mary answered. "Of course."
"Alright then, I'll be there in a couple minutes."

Mary hung up the phone and hurried to the bathroom to check her face and hair in the mirror one more time. She adjusted her snug green t-shirt under her black hoodie, made sure the zipper was up on her jeans, and pulled her long auburn hair into a pony tail, leaving just a few strands to dangle down the sides of her face. She looked into her grey-green eyes in the mirror and told herself to calm down.. Just breathe.. what the heck are you so nervous about anyway?

Mary went back to the living room and sat on the couch while she laced up her black boots. The door bell rang and she could see through the window beside the door that Billy was waiting for her. She jumped up and walked toward the door tugging nervously at her clothes as she reached for the door knob. She pulled the door open and was greeted by Billy's usual smirk.

"Hey," he said casually.
"Hey," she said back.
"Ready?"
"Yep."
"Well, let's go then." he said as if he'd been waiting around for her all day.

Billy drove a beat up old 57 Chevy pick up. He had wanted one since he was a kid and had been saving up for the last two years so that he could buy one by the time he turned 16. He had big plans for that rusty green truck. He was going to fix it up - paint, new seats, the works.. but now, it just looked more like an old junker. The kind of truck that you questioned whether or not it even ran let alone if it was safe. He walked several steps ahead of her to the curb and then around to the driver's side. He opened his door and hopped in and was shutting his door by the time Mary reached hers. She pulled the heavy door open and climbed in, smiling at Billy.

"Nice truck." she said.
"Yeah, I know." he replied. "She'll look better when I finish fixing her up though." he said smiling proudly as he put the key in the ignition. The truck roared and rumbled as he turned the key. He sat back, enjoying the sound. Running was obviously not a problem for this vehicle. He put the truck in gear and off they went, bouncing and jostling down the street.

Mary felt awkward and a little uncomfortable. She was happy to be with Billy, but just didn't know what to say as they rode along. He was so quiet, and she was no good at small talk. She looked around at the truck's interior - it was worn, but clean. The vinyl seats had lots of rips and tears in them, white stuffing sticking out here and there, and the dash had many scratches along with a couple missing knobs. There was a pair of pliers bouncing on the threadbare carpet floor. She could see him glance at her now and then out of the corner of his eye.

"So," Mary said quietly, "do you play pool often?" They were on their way to have a game of pool before going to the dance at the school.

"Yeah," Billy answered. "Well, we have a pool table at home.. actually, I have one in my room. So, I guess I play quite a bit.. You play much?"

"Not really," Mary said. "I go out with my brother and his friends now and then.. you have a pool table in your room??"

"Yep," he said, looking at her and smiling. "Maybe you can come over and see it sometime."

"Sounds like fun," she said, smiling back. "I could sure use the practice, I'm not all that good."

"Well, I'm sure I could help you with that." he said, smiling bigger. Mary blushed a little.

Mary just wasn't sure what to expect from this boy at all. She knew that he went to church with one of her friends from band, she'd heard he was in Boy Scouts, and she knew that he hung out now and then with her brother and his girlfriend. Half the time, when he would talk to her, she wasn't sure if he was just being friendly or if he had some alterior motives.. For the most part, she just assumed he was being friendly.

beginnings and endings..

I have hundreds of beginnings
trapped inside my head
give me time to write them down
so they can all be read
we can spin ourselves a story,
watch beginnings turn to endings
appreciate life's rhythm
while time and space we're bending
stop and look and listen
love and sorrow you will see
you can't know who you are
until you know who you will be
